Parenting Middle School Teens Is Easier When You Stop For 5 Minutes

May 29th, 2008 by Caroline

Parenting my middle school teen is so immense and endless. I tried to solve issues using whatever wisdom I had inside me but that quickly proved to be very limited. Then I discovered that I could enrich my parenting in as little as 5 minutes a day. That made my parenting much easier and more effective.

The day is short and the work is endless

I wake up and I feel bombarded by stuff. Do you? I get a flood of email, papers, bills, phonecalls and requests for my time. The minutes and hours rush by and when I get home the demands on me continue. So when can I fit in something into my schedule?

How to parent should be at the top of my list, yet in practice I have to admit that for a long time I neglected to schedule time to learn to be a better parent. So the months rolled by while I remained frustrated with parenting problems that dragged on from week to week—and I did nothing new. So tell me: can I expect a new result if I do the same thing week after week?

I promised my wife

One week I got fed up with myself and I promised my wife that I would spend time that day to improve my parenting. The day rushed by me I and I was exhausted. I had hoped to spend that evening, or at very least an hour, browsing through books or surfing the internet. But my time was up and I was begging for sleep.

5 short minutes energized me

I couldn’t go back on my promise to my wife! So I decided to spend 5 minutes(!) on parenting, just to keep my word. At the time I felt ashamed and a little foolish—until I began to actually work at it. I gathered all the parenting books and audios and DVDs we had in the house. That energized me. So I allowed myself another 5 minutes to begin browsing through one of the books.

The result: I spent another 20 minutes reading that parenting book that night. And that week I fit in another session reading about parenting. Every week I fit in breaks to improve my parenting. I collected books, audios, DVDs and found amazing resources online.

Think in terms of a 5 minute break

The point is: that when I stopped thinking in terms of “a whole evening devoted to parenting” and I switched to thinking “5 minutes to improve my parenting” I was energized. I could fit breaks into my week and often every day.

Needless to say: my parenting has improved since I began scheduling 5 minute parenting breaks. I devote each break to defining problems and finding solutions.

You can try it now::

1-     Stop now. Close off 5 minutes.

2-     What incident with your Middle School teen comes up for you?

3-     Choose a person, book, audio, course or online resource you will turn to TODAY (for at least 5 minutes) to find a solution to this incident.

4-     Schedule a time TODAY and write it down.

Once you begin you will be surprised how one 5 minute break can snowball into longer periods and more often.

Begin today and you will see how this little action will make your parenting easier and more effective.
